Google finally drops more 3D trees into Google Earth

When Google Earth 6 was released late last year, it brought with it the oft-requested feature of 3D trees. However, since that time, Google has only added a few additional sets of trees to Google Earth. The most notable was the substantial addition in London in preparation for the Royal Wedding.

Now Google has added trees in quite a few more cities including New York, Philadelphia, Boston, London and various cities in the California Bay Area. New York and London already had 3D tree coverage, so we can assume their coverage areas have been expanded with this latest release.

3D tree coverage makes an enormous difference in the realism of a particular area. As we said when they first unveiled this feature, it's something we've been waiting a long time for and we're glad they did such a fine job of building it. Now if we can just get some more trees added (Atlanta, please?), things will be even better!

To see them for yourself, simply open up Google Earth and fly to one of the cities listed above. Be sure that the "Trees" layer is checked under "3D Buildings" in the main "Layers" section on the left side of your Google Earth window.

Here's a short video that Google created to show off some of the new trees:

Austin Airport Finally Gets Free Wi-Fi…Somewhat Free

On every arrival to- and departure from the Austin airport, I’ve wondered why there isn’t free Wi-Fi. Now that I live here and I am traveling more for CC, the question comes up each time I walk from the parking lot to the terminal. I’ve been forced into tethering my cell phone to the laptop to get Internet access (which actually has worked great). Austin claims to be a huge tech center and yet we welcome visitors, conference attendees, business partners, customers and new residents like myself by pushing a paid Wi-Fi service inside the terminals.

Today, via a friend and the Biz Journals site, I’ve learned that the Austin airport now has limited free Wi-Fi service within the terminal. The free Wi-Fi service is available but it’s limited to a 30-minute session. After the thirty minutes are up, you will have to pay $5/hour or $8/day to remain online.

This limitation is certainly disappointing – the limit works great if your plane is on time but if the plane is delayed, thirty minutes isn’t really enough time to update Twitter, Instagram, Yobongo, Flickr, Facebook, MySpace?, PicPlz, YouTube, Color and Path that your plane is delayed and you hate X airline and that you expect at least $1,000 or you will blog about the airline. Perhaps you should pre-prepare for a case like this one and have the messages ready to go so you can post on the 29th minute.

I look forward to the day that every airport and bus/rail station has free Wi-Fi available for all ticketed passengers.

LinkedIn on Android, oh finally!

LinkedIn has finally launched its application for the ever-growing Android platform. Before you jump the gun and try looking for this application on the Android Market, let me tell you that it’s in early beta, and available only from the LinkedIn portal.

Minimum requirement: Android OS 2.1 or higher

LinkedIn application for Android powered phones

How to get the app for your Android phone:

  1. Visit http://m.linkedin.com/android from your Android phone

  2. Read the instructions and download the app (about 1MB) to your SD card

  3. On your Android phone, click on settings – Applications and check Unknown Sources (allow install of non-market applications)

  4. Pop up your SD card directory, and click on the LinkedIn.apk, and install

Join this LinkedIn for Android group, and post your comments/suggestions/feedback on this application. There’s already a long series of active discussions happening on the same.

First impressions:

  1. Really fast – lean and mean

  2. Can view latest updates, your connections, pending invitations and search LinkedIn

  3. Very less memory footprint, and resource usage – pretty good for an app tagged as early beta!

  4. LinkedIn mails (inbox) feature missing – might be included in the official version?

Can’t wait to use this app, on the go, to the max in the days coming up…
